Lady'Backs maintain momentum advance to finals in three of four flights
New York, N.Y. – After a dominating performance in doubles on Saturday, the University of Arkansas women’s tennis team carried over their opening day energy as freshman Aurelija Miseviciute, senior Karina Ledaja and sophomore Audrey Bordeleau advanced to their respective flight final matches on Sunday at the USTA Collegiate Classic.
Rain continued to play a nagging factor at the 25-team tournament as each of the four flights were sent to a different indoor venue. Miseviciute remains undefeated as she improved to 9-0 in singles play this fall with three big wins on Saturday to advance to the flight A finals match.
Miseviciute also won her first career Southeastern Conference singles match in the second round against South Carolina’s Gira Schofield in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2.
Ledaja advanced to the flight C finals match with three wins over three quality teams including last year’s top-ten finisher Clemson’s Kathi Gerber, 6-1, 6-0. On Monday morning, Ledaja squares off against Baylor’s Iva Milhavlova.
“The weather really made conditions tough today,” said Ledaja. “There was a limited warm-up period and not much time between matches, but by the end of the second match and coming all that way, I knew I could put away one more [match].”
Bordeleau was the third big winner for the Lady’Backs on Sunday. The Quebec City, Quebec native won all three matches to advance to the advance to the flight D finals match beginning with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Penn’s Ashley Lostorro. In round two, Bordeleau won in a second set tiebreaker to seal the deal over Cornell’s Kara Maloy, 6-1, 7-6(10). The semifinal match also proved to be a close one for Bordeleau. She defeated fourth-seeded Gia Nafarrete of Boston College, 6-3, 7-5.
Bordeleau faces her second Boston College opponent in 18 hours tomorrow morning against Lindsey Nash.
“We certainly improved our results from our first visit to the Collegiate Classic,” said head coach Michael Hegarty. “We have come a long way in 12 months, and we are shooting to take it another step tomorrow. Several Lady’Backs covered a lot of ground this weekend.
Finals matches begin Monday morning at 8:30 a.m. For more information concerning Arkansas women’s tennis or any other Lady Razorback sport, please visit LADYBACKS.COM.
