Lady'Backs net pair of wins

After a come-back win in five over Utah earlier in the day, Arkansas (6-2) was solid against Iowa State (6-4) in the 30-22, 30-25, 30-24 win. “The last six games we played like we’re capable of,” said Arkansas head coach Chris Poole. “We woke up from hibernation and played really well. Last night was our first game on the road and I don’t know if it was jitters or what but we settled down and we much more relaxed. We have an opportunity to learn from the trip and get better.” Arkansas possessed better court awareness and a confident swagger that had been missing in recent matches. The result was a dominating game one performance with Arkansas out-hitting the Cyclones .417 to .188 paced by six kills and no errors from junior Denitza Koleva who hit .857 (6-0-7) in the opening act. Senior Karla Crose was 4-0-4 with three blocks while junior Kele Brewer and sophomore Jessica Dorrell added three kills each in the first game. The Lady’Backs never managed a large lead in the next game but the win was never in doubt as Arkansas hit .229 and notched six team blocks while holding ISU to a .067 hitting percentage. The third game was also close and Arkansas’ hitting fell off a bit to just .100 in the frame but again the Lady’Backs never looked rattled. Arkansas’ offensive balance returned Saturday after a disappointing, one-dimensional attack in a loss against Missouri State the night before. Brewer and Koleva finished the match with 11 kills each with Koleva adding 14 digs and Brewer seven in the win. Crose hit a team-leading .467 with eight kills and six blocks while Dorrell added eight kills and two blocks. Sophomore libero Ashley Miller played well all weekend finishing the day with 11 digs bringing her total to 67 for the three matches. The Vacaville, Calif., native averaged nearly six digs per game for the weekend. Arkansas notched a come-from-behind win over Utah to open the day. The Lady’Backs lost the first two games but rallied winning the final three, 22-30 25-30, 30-22, 31-29, 15-12. The victory helps Arkansas avenge a similar loss at Utah two seasons ago. The Utes, ranked 10th in the country, spotted Arkansas a two-game lead on their home court before rallying for the five-game win. “As a team, I’m proud of the effort,” said Poole after the first match. “We didn’t give up. Our conditioning this summer definitely came into play. It was a great team effort and a lot of different people stepped up today.” Brewer paced the team with 16 kills, eight digs and three blocks. Koleva added 14 kills and 19 digs, while Dorrell tallied 13 kills, hit .370 and had seven blocks. Allison rounded out the Lady’Backs in double-digit kills with 10 and added seven blocks, including two solos, in the win. The Lady Razorbacks return to action Sept. 15-17, at the San Diego Tournament in San Diego, Calif. Arkansas faces UNLV, San Diego and Long Beach State. The Lady’Backs return home Sept. 23, hosting Tennessee as Southeastern Conference play begins.
