Lady'Backs Ready For SEC Action at Georgia

FAYETTEVILLE – The University of Arkansas softball team opens Southeastern Conference play against No. 12 Georgia, Saturday, March 11 with a doubleheader at noon in Athens, Ga.

The series concludes Sunday at noon. Georgia has a 9-15 advantage in the all-time series. Saturday’s game is a rematch of the season opener, Feb. 10, for the Lady Razorbacks (11-8). In the first game of the Diamond Fun and Sun Classic, in Miami, Fla., the Bulldogs (17-5) came back to defeat Arkansas, 7-6, in nine innings.

Lady’Back softball head coach Jamie Pinkerton said the previous meeting this season with Georgia only helped to prepare the team for conference play.

“Well, obviously, we’ll have our hands full,” he said. “I think it’s a positive that our young players have played them and it’s not an unknown we’re facing. We look forward to starting SEC play and this is when we find out where we’re at.”

The Lady’Backs finished 6-0 in the Country Inn and Suites Arkansas Invitational, March 3-5. Sophomore Katy Henry threw a no-hitter in the tournament finale against Centenary, which is only the sixth in school history.

Pinkerton said he was pleased with the Lady’Backs performance in the two home tournaments, especially in the circle.

“I think right now we’re playing very well,” he said. “We’re going to take some momentum into Athens. Hopefully with our pitching the way it’s been the last week and a half, we can hold it to two or three runs and maybe we can sneak out of there with a win or two.”
