GAUDALAJARA, Mexico — Arkansas head softball coach Mike Larabee and Team USA improved to 5-0 in the Pan American Games on Wednesday taking down Cuba 3-0 followed by a 4-1 win over Puerto Rico.
Team USA is back in action today at 1 p.m. where they will take on a powerful Canadian team.
The victory over Cuba was the first seven-inning game that Team USA has played thus far in the tournament. In the circle, pitcher Jordan Taylor (Valencia, Calif. /Michigan 2011) recorded her second win of the tournament racking up seven strikeouts.
Team USA scored their first run in the bottom of the third when Lauren Gibson (Pasadena, Md. / Tennessee junior) struck a ball hard out to left field for a triple which brought home Molly Johnson (Tucson, Ariz./ Kentucky 2010). Team USA would go on to score one more run in the third and one in the sixth to give them the victory.
In their second match-up of the day Team USA took on a strong Puerto Rican team. The women in red, white and blue were led by Stacy May-Johnson (Reno, Nev. / Iowa 2006), Michelle Moultrie (Jacksonville, Fla. /Florida senior) and Kelly Grieve (Asheville, N.C. / Tennessee 2010) who all recorded two hits for the game. Pitcher Chelsea Thomas (Pleasantville, Iowa / Missouri junior) tossed her 10th strikeout of the tournament and captured her second win.
Team USA has allowed just one run in 27 innings and has outscored their opponents 34-1.
