Late Mississippi State Layup Lifts Bulldogs Past Razorbacks 69-67

STARKVILLE, Miss. (AP) – Dietric Slater’s layup with 9 seconds left lifted Mississippi State to a 69-67 victory over Arkansas on Saturday night, snapping the Razorbacks’ nine-game winning streak.

The Bulldogs (11-3, 1-0 Southeastern Conference) overcame big games from Arkansas stars Ronnie Brewer, who had 24 points, and Jonathan Modica, who added 20 for the Razorbacks (11-3, 0-1).

Slater finished with 13 points in the young Bulldogs’ third straight victory. They have won eight of nine since losing two straight at home to teams from the lowly Southland Conference.

In this one, there were four ties and four lead changes in the final 8 minutes.

Jamont Gordon tied it at 67 on a jumper with 50 seconds remaining.

Arkansas then called time out and worked the ball to Ronnie Brewer, who missed a 3-pointer with 17 seconds left. Slater got the rebound and hit a reverse layup to give Mississippi State the lead for good.

Charles Thomas rimmed out a 3-pointer at the buzzer for Arkansas.

Charles Rhodes had 18 points to lead the Bulldogs, while Reginald Delk had 11 and Gordon finished with 10.

Mississippi State let a 10-point halftime lead evaporate when Arkansas opened the second half with an 18-7 run and took a 44-43 lead on Thomas’ free throw with 14:35 remaining.

Neither team led by more than seven the rest of the way.

Steven Hill finished with 10 points for Arkansas, which hadn’t lost since Maryland beat the Razorbacks 72-65 in November.
