PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. — University of Arkansas sophomore-to-be Emma Lavy earned a runner-up finish at the 111th Women’s Western National Amateur Championship at Sawgrass Country Club Saturday.
Lavy reached the finals but fell in the 36-hole round to Victoria Tanco of Argentina on the 24th hole. Tanco birdied three of her first four holes and Lavy was never able to catch her.
Lavy had a great week on her road to the finals. She qualified 10th with a two-day total of 145 and won her first match against Sarah Ababa, Davao City, The Philippines, 1 up. On Thursday she defeated Ellen Ceresko, Jefferson Township, Pa., 3 and 1. Her Thursday afternoon match was suspended due to weather and completed on Friday morning when she defeated Erica Popson, a University of Tennessee Volunteer from Davenport, Fla., 5 and 4.
Later that day she defeated Vanderbilt University senior, Marina Alex, of Wayne, N.J., 2 up; and then defeated Jackie Chang, a University of North Carolina student from Paradise Valley, Ariz., 4 and 3.
TodaywasLavy’s eighth andninth round of competitive golf in the last six days. Mixed with Florida heat and humidity and the smoke from the neighboring fires, play was tough at times.
