Lavy lead Arkansas in first round

FAYETTEVILLE — Sophomore Emma Lavy fired a one-over 73 leading the University of Arkansas to a tie for fifth with a 309 in the first round of the 2012 Southeastern Conference Women’s Golf Championship at Blessings Friday. Lavy started tough with a bogey and a double on her second and third holes but settled in to turn at three over. She birdied four and five and 10 to finish plus one for the day. “It was a tough day out here with the wind and the cold,” Arkansas head coach Shauna Estes-Taylor said. “We started out a little nervous but got it back coming home. Emma kept us in it and we are in a good position to move up the leaderboard.” “It was a rough start,” said Lavy, “but I was able to settle down and play better. I was a bit nervous but I just have to trust my preparation and execute the game plan.” Arkansas counted a 309 Friday and is just 12 strokes off the leader second-ranked Alabama. The Crimson Tide finished with a nine-over 297. Fifth-ranked Auburn is second with 306 followed by No. 15 Florida with 307 and No. 9 Georgia with 308. Freshman Hally Leadbetter is tied for 33rd with 80 and sophomore Emily Podzielinski is tied for 41st with an 81. “Ten or 12 strokes is not too much to overcome on a golf course like this,” Estes-Taylor said. “We are in a position that I’m excited about. The team will come out more ready and more comfortable in the second round. We are getting comfortable with playing in front of our fans and family. We have a perfect game plan for this golf course and we’ll come out ready to fire tomorrow.”
