Lewis even in first round of U.S. Women's Open

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Former University of Arkansas women’s golfer Stacy Lewis carded an even par 73 in first round action at the 2008 U.S. Women’s Open in Edina, Minn., Thursday. The Woodlands, Texas, native came off the course tied for 40th overall but most of the field was not finished. Lewis began her day on the back nine where she played even golf despite an up-and-down start. She pared the 10th hole, followed by a bogey on 11 and a par on 12. Lewis dropped stroke with a birdie on 13, picked it back up on 14 only to birdie 15 again falling even. She would par the last three holes on the first side. Lewis made the turn with an even 37 but bogeyed the second and third holes. She fought back with a two on the par-three fourth hole and closed with a birdie on nine to finish her round even. Lewis’ average drive was 266 yards and she hit 10 of 18 fairways and 13 greens in the first round. Lewis is paired with Laura Davies and Helen Afredsson in the first and second rounds with both carding 70s on Thursday. The trio has an afternoon tee time Friday.
