Lewis opens with 77 in first round of Amateur

NORTH PLAINS, Ore. – University of Arkansas junior golfer Stacy Lewis carded a six-over 77 in the first round of the 106th U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club in North, Plains, Ore., Monday. Lewis, one of two Lady Razorbacks to qualify for the event, made the turn on the par-71, 6,380-yard course at two-over. The Woodlands, Texas, native, ranked as the No. 1 amateur in the country, struggled in the second nine. Back-to-back bogeys on three and four followed by a double on five exploded her score as she left the course tied for 88th after the first round. Future Lady Razorback Corinna Rees is also playing and was paired with Lewis in the first round. The Pebble Beach, Calif., freshman nearly mirrored her counterpart turning at plus-two with a double and two bogeys on the front nine. She is also tie for 88th after the first round. The duo need to climb into the top 64 at the end of stroke play Tuesday to move on to the match play portion of the tournament Wednesday-Sunday.
