BATON ROUGE, La. – Brad Cresse and Wally Pontiff had three hits each to lead No. 10 LSU to a 12-3 win over Arkansas in the opener of a three-game Southeastern Conference series Friday night at Alex Box Stadium.
LSU (24-10, 8-4 SEC) won its fourth game in a row while Arkansas (15-18, 2-9 SEC) dropped its sixth in a row overall and ninth-consecutive conference game. The Razorbacks’ nine-game losing streak in league play equals the longest on the UA record books.
Making his first start in an SEC game, Tiger starter Hunter Gomez (5-0) struck out eight and allowed just one run (earned) on six hits in seven innings to earn the win.
UA starter Gary Hogan Jr. (2-3) suffered his third-consecutive loss. Hogan gave up eight runs (four earned) on eight hits while walking four and striking out one in four innings.
LSU took a 4-0 lead in the second inning with four unearned runs. Arkansas’ Jeff Fletcher cut the lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the inning with his first collegiate home run.
The Tigers added two runs in the third inning before Blair Barbier hit a two-run homer, his fourth of the year, in the fourth for an 8-1 LSU lead. Cresse added a solo homer in the sixth, his SEC-leading 15th of the season. Pontiff’s leadoff triple in the eighth led to three more Tiger runs before Arkansas cut the lead to 12-2 with on Bryan King’s sacrifice fly. Fletcher’s RBI single in the ninth scored the Hogs’ final run.
The Tigers, ranked 10th by Baseball America, and Razorbacks continue their series Saturday at 4 p.m. CT and Sunday at 12:07 p.m. CT.
