Macias Prepared For FINA World Championships

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Sophomore Ayumi Macias will be the fourth member of the Arkansas swimming and diving team to compete at the 2017 FINA World Championships in Budapest, Hungary, when she competes in the 800-meter freestyle early Friday morning.

Macias, representing her home country of Mexico, will swim in the second heat of the event in Friday’s early session that runs from 9:30-12:15 p.m. in Budapest, or 2:30-5:15 a.m. CT.

She will try to best her lifetime mark of 8:41.53 in the 800 that she set at the 2014 Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China.

The distance swimmer is coming off an impressive freshman campaign where she became the second Arkansas freshman to qualify for the NCAA Championships in an individual event since the 2008 season.

The 800m final will be during Saturday’s night session in Budapest that is from 5:30-8:10 p.m. local time, or 10:30 a.m.-2:10 p.m. CT.

Three Arkansas divers already participated at the FINA World Championships earlier last week, as senior Nicole Gillis (South Africa) finished 14th in the 3m synchro with a score of 249.66, and incoming freshmen Brooke Schultz (United States) and Maha Amer (Egypt) finished 25th (248.80) and 27th (245.40) respectively on the 3m springboard.
