Mahon survives first round of match play

FAYETTEVILLE — University of Arkansas junior golfer Courtney Mahon survived her first day of match play at the 2005 U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links Championship at Swopes Memorial Golf Course in Kansas City, Mo., Wednesday. Mahon defeated Erica Haney of Caldwell, Ohio, two-and-one Wednesday to move on in match play. The Topeka, Kan., native played all square through the first three holes and went one up on the 368-yard fourth hole after Haney bogeyed the par-four. A birdie by Haney on the fifth hole saw the duo play all square for two more holes until Mahon was again up one on the seventh after a missed putt by Haney. The back-and-fourth battle continued with Mahon up one on the ninth and then all square on the 10th, 11th and 12th holes. Mahon finally got the upper hand on the 13th hole with a birdie on the par-three. It was a lead she would not surrender holding the one-up status until the 17th where she clinched the match after going two-up to advance. Mahon faces four-two winner Ashley Tate of Littleton, Colo., at 8:10 a.m., Thursday as match play continues through the weekend. Arkansas teammate and El Dorado native Amanda McCurdy also made Tuesday’s cut to the field of 64 but struggled in her match against Stephanie Ruiz of Edmond, Okla. McCurdy, who is coming off her first trip to the U.S. Women’s Open last month, trailed from the first hole and found herself behind by three as late as the 15th hole. But McCurdy wasn’t totally out of the hunt with back-to-back pars on the 16th and 17th holes while taking advantage of a pair of bogies from her opponent. She had a change to even it up on the 18th, a par-four, 404-yard hole when Ruiz went one-over but McCurdy also bogeyed the hole to lose the match.
