FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – A new era of University of Arkansas golf has begun with the official opening of the Mary B. and Fred W. Smith Golf Center in Johnson, Ark.
The practice facility, located on the grounds of the new Clear Creek Golf Club, will be the home for both the Razorback and Lady Razorback golf programs. The golf center includes six indoor-outdoor practice bays, an indoor video swing analysis station, office space and fully furnished men and women’s locker room facilities.
“We are extremely grateful to Fred and Mary Smith for helping us build one of the finest, if not the finest, collegiate golf practice facility in the nation,” Arkansas Athletic Director Frank Broyles said. “It will be a great tool in allowing our golf programs to practice throughout the year. Fred and Mary have been great supporters of the Razorback program for many years. We are proud that they have once again stepped forward to ensure that student-athletes at the University of Arkansas have top-notch facilities.”
Fred Smith was the long-time CEO of the Donrey Media Group and is the Chairman of the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation.
“We are excited to be a part of this new facility that will help the Razorback and Lady Razorback golf programs continue to compete at the highest national level,” Fred Smith said. “Many members of our family play golf, so we have an appreciation for the commitment and many hours of practice that are required to succeed. We have a great love for the University of Arkansas and have always been proud to support the Razorbacks.”
Following a short program, Coach Broyles hit the ceremonial first shot from a hitting bay at the facility. Clear Creek Golf Club Owner and Developer John Tyson also took part in the festivities and hit a ceremonial tee shot.
Both the UA men and women’s golf teams will begin to use the facility immediately. Official dedication ceremonies of the golf center will be held later this spring.
