Mason Earns SEC Honor

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Freshman Jailyn Mason earned Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week honors after helping lead the University of Arkansas women’s basketball team to a Nugget Classic tournament title in Reno, Nevada, and a 6-0 start to the season, the league office announced on Tuesday.

The freshman from Mason, Ohio, filled up the stat sheet in wins over Memphis and Navy, scoring a combined 18 points with nine rebounds and seven assists. She scored nine points in both games and tied a career high with five assists in a 70-67 win over Navy in the Nugget Classic championship game.

Mason has started every game this season and is averaging 8.0 points, 3.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game, including double-digit scoring efforts against South Dakota (10 points) and Stetson (11 points).

Mason is the first Razorback to earn an SEC weekly honor since Jessica Jackson was named SEC Co-Player of the Week during the 2014-15 season. She is also the second different freshman and fourth different player overall to earn an SEC weekly honor under head coach Jimmy Dykes.

Mason and the Razorbacks wrap up a three-game road swing traveling to Tulsa for its first true road game of the season on Wednesday night, before returning home for an SEC/Big 12 Challenge matchup with Texas Tech on Saturday afternoon.
