Matt Bortis Named SEC Golfer of the Week
BY ANDRES FOCIL
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – After posting a career-best fifth-place finish at the Taylor Made Waikoloa Intercollegiate on Feb. 13, freshman Matt Bortis was named the Southeastern Conference Golfer of the Week.
“I’m very proud of Matt’s achievements,” Arkansas head coach Mike Ketcham said. “He has worked extremely hard as a freshman and has established himself as one of the better players on our team. I know he has set lofty goals and expectations for himself and now his hard work is starting to pay off.”
Bortis, a native of Springfield, Mo., is the first freshman at Arkansas to earn the league’s honor. In Kona, Hawaii he helped lead the then ranked No. 18 Razorbacks to a third-place showing over a very competitive field. The team’s finish propelled the Hogs to break into the No. 12 spot the following week.
He ended the three-day tournament with a seven-under-par 209, while posting a season-best 68 in the second round. Bortis’ performance put him at two-under-par through three tournaments and gave him a stroke average of 71.7, the second-best on the team.
Next weekend Bortis and the rest of the Razorbacks will travel to Los Angeles, Calif., for the USC Intercollegiate on Feb. 29-March 2.
