McCurdy leads Lady'Backs on opening day at Lady Razorback Invitational
Day One Overall Team Scores || Individual Agate ROGERS, Ark. – On a windy day, Iowa State was more at home than the host University of Arkansas as the Cyclones posted a 297 to lead after the first round of the Lady Razorback Invitational at Pinnacle Country Club. Led by junior Amanda McCurdy, Arkansas allowed the gusty conditions on the back nine to slow a fast start into a 303. Cyclone senior Lisa Meshke shot a two-under 70 for the first-day lead, followed by her teammate Louise Kenney, McCurdy and Michigan’s Amy Schmucker at 73 each. Play resumes Monday with tee times starting at 9 a.m., and the Lady Razorbacks teeing off between 10:10 and 10:50 a.m. “It’s not a bad way to start the tournament, a little better than average, but I think we can do better tomorrow,” Lady Razorback head coach Kelly Hester said. Illinois State was two strokes behind Arkansas in third place at 305. Michigan was fourth at 306 behind a 74 from Brianna Broderick as Schmucker plays the tournament as an individual for the Wolverines. Missouri’s Denise Knabel also shot a 74 to lead the Tigers in fourth overall at 309. Missouri was fifth at 309 followed by Alabama at 310. Hester was pleased with the way the team got out of the blocks as the host. “Sometimes when you’re playing at home you will start the tournament slow, but today we made the turn at one-over and we just didn’t play the back side as well as we could,” she said. “We made a few minor mistakes that you shouldn’t make at home, I know that we can do better tomorrow. Combined with the wind on the back side, I’m fairly pleased.” McCurdy was an example of those back nine struggles as she saw a solid round get away from her at the close. “The last three holes seem to get to me each year, and I’ve got to go out tomorrow and take them one at a time and not let them bother me,” McCurdy said. The junior three-putted on 16 and 17, but considering her lack of play this week due to illness was pleased with the start. “I haven’t played 18 since the Tennessee tournament, and I felt a little rusty before we started today,” McCurdy said. “But when I birdied the first hole, it really got me going.” Both Iowa State leaders held or bettered on the back nine. Meshke was a consistent one-under front and back while Kenney shaved a stroke off her back nine with a par 36. Arkansas’ Gena Johnson was second for the Lady’Backs with a 75 followed by Lindsey Hindsaw at 77. Freshman Stacy Lewis and junior Courtney Mahon shot 78 each. Lina Axelsson paced the Arkansas individuals with a 75 for the day. Sarah Trew turned in an 84. Three players joined Broderick and Knaebel in a five-way tie for fifth overall at 74. Sally Hinton of Southwest Missouri, Brenda Norris of Texas A&M and Kaila Fuller of Illinois State each cared 74.
