McCurdy wraps up first day at U.S. Women's Amateur

Jump to scorecard FAYETTEVILLE — University of Arkansas junior Amanda McCurdy fired a first round 76 to open the 2005 U.S. Women’s Amateur in Roswell, Ga., Monday. McCurdy, who has played in several events this summer including the U.S. Women’s Open, finished the day four-over on the par-72 Settlindown Creek Course at the Ansley Golf Club. The El Dorado, Ark., native began the day on the 10th tee but struggled a bit going two over in the first three holes. She finished the back nine at plus four but rebounded playing the front nine even. McCurdy came off the course tied for 61st overall with several players still on the course. McCurdy finished as the event runner-up last year in Erie, Pa., earning an exemption this year. McCurdy was three holes down in the match play with four to go in 2004 but made a valiant attempt to square the match. She won two of the next three holes but couldn’t edge winner Jane Park. Stroke play continues Tuesday followed by match play beginning Wednesday. The U.S. Women’s Amateur is open to all female amateurs with a USGA handicap of less than 5.4. Jane Park of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., is the defending champion edging McCurdy in last year’s event in Erie, Pa. Match play rounds will be telecast on The Golf Channel Aug. 3-7, from 5:00-7:00 p.m., Central. For more information about Arkansas golf log on to LADYBACKS.COM.
