Men to defend Border Olympics title

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark.-The 2009 Border Olympics is the next stop on the schedule for the University of Arkansas men’s golf team. The 54-hole tournament held at the par 72, 7,125 yard Laredo Country Club will be played March 13-14. There is a field of 16 teams including Houston (host),Baylor, Houston Baptist, Lamar, Louisville, New Mexico State, New Orleans, North Texas, Notre Dame, Rice, Texas State, UALR, UT Arlington, Vanderbilt, Washington State.

The Razorbacks have had previous success with the tournament, winning the team title in 2008, by five strokes with a 867(295-281-291) finish over Lamar, followed by South Carolina-Aiken, UT Arlington, Baylor, New Mexico State, Houston, North Texas, Rice, Washington State, Louisiana-Lafayette, Texas State, UTEP, and Wyoming.

Colston Williams of Baylor took the individual title by seven strokes with a 207(69-69-70). Razorbacks Andrew Landry and Sam Chavez tied with UTEP’s Roger Sloan for second place, carding 214(71-73-70) and 214(76-65-73) respectfully.

Thus far in the spring, the Hogs have had a fourth place finish at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate, and a tie for fifth place in the Seminole Intercollegiate. Standout performances include Jason Cuthbertson’s 1-under 215(73-75-67) tie for third place in last week’s Seminole Intercollegiate, just two strokes behind the winner and David Lingmerth’s fourth place tie with 216(73-74-77).
