Miseviciute mows down ranked opponent at Indoor Championships

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Arkansas junior Lady Razorback Aurelija Miseviciute continued her fall dominance against top seeds at the ITA Indoor Tennis Championships on Thursday.

Miseviciute continued her climb against ranked opponents with a win over No. 8 ranked Georgia Rose of Northwestern, 6-2, 2-6, 6-1.

“Aurelija had a tough match out there against one of the best women’s tennis players in the nation,” said Arkansas assistant coach Jeroen Joling. “After losing the first set she (Rose) stepped her game up, but Aurelija really showed heart by taking the third set easily and winning the match.”

Miseviciute plays Sanaz Marand of North Carolina on Friday, with the winner of that match set to play one more to complete the day. Marand is currently ranked No. 39 in the nation.

The Lady’Back tennis team also competed in doubles action on Thursday at the SEC Fall Coaches’ Classic.

“We got a slow start in doubles, which is uncharacteristic of this team considering how we’ve started so far this fall,” said head coach Michael Hegarty. “But, there is still a lot of tennis to play and I expect our team to bounce back strong.”

In Flight A, No. 25 ranked, senior Maryori Franco and junior Nanar Airapetian, fell to No. 23 ranked Gira Schofield and Ana Zubori of South Carolina, 8-5.

In Flight B, senior Audrey Bordeleau along with freshman Delia Demaschin dropped their first match to the South Carolina duo of Suzanna Mansour and Megan McGavock, 8-3. However, the Lady’Back pair won their consolation match, 8-2, over Alabama’s Alice Tunaru and Tiffany Welcher.

Tomorrow’s play at the Coaches’ Classic will consist of one round of action in singles and doubles.
