Miseviciute remains perfect against SEC; Hogs fall 6-1

ATHENS, Ga. – Senior Aurelija Miseviciute remained perfect in singles and doubles of Southeastern Conference play on Sunday, as the 23rd-ranked University of Arkansas Razorbacks fell short against No. 2 Georgia, 6-1. Both teams entered the match tied atop the SEC with a 4-1 conference record, while leading their respective divisions. However, the Hogs (9-5, 4-2) began the day with a disadvantage while only five players were available for the match. Although facing a handicap to begin play, Arkansas would not relinquish easily. Ela Kaluder and Miseviciute pushed their conference record to a perfect 6-0 after upending No. 30 Chelsea Gullickson and Nadja Gilchrist, 8-4. Nanar Airapetian and Kate Lukomskaya vaulted to an early 7-3 lead in doubles, but couldn’t stop a late charge by Georgia’s Monika Dancevic and Yvette Hyndman as they prevailed, 9-7. “I’m proud of our team’s performance under difficult conditions today,” said Arkansas head coach Michael Hegarty. “Winning the doubles may have put a totally different complexion on the match.” After the Bulldogs (15-2, 5-1) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, Miseviciute put the Razorbacks on the board. Ranked fourth overall in singles, the 2008 All-SEC First Team member ran her record to a perfect 6-0 against SEC opponents after blasting past No. 52 Hyndman, 6-3, 6-2. The win also moves Miseviciute’s record to 20-2 against nationally-ranked opponents for the 2008-2009 season. Unfortunately, Georgia would take the remaining matches in providing their five-point victory. Freshman Emily Carbone fell to No.74 Dancevic, 6-4, 6-3, while Ellis clinched the match over Lukomskaya, 6-3, 6-3. Arkansas will be back at home next weekend, hosting a pair of SEC opponents in Florida and South Carolina at the Billingsley Tennis Center.
