FAYETTEVILLE – University of Arkansas cornerback Tevin Mitchel has been named SEC Freshman of the Week, it was announced Monday.
One week after recording a career-high 13 tackles and one fumble recovery in Arkansas’ 42-38 defeat of 14th-ranked Texas A&M, Mitchel earned his first collegiate start against No. 15 Auburn. Against the Tigers, Mitchel notched seven tackles, including three solo, as the defense held Auburn scoreless over the final three quarters in the Razorbacks’ 38-14 victory. The UA secondary allowed Auburn to complete just nine passes for 104 yards during the game and held the Tigers to just 227 total yards in the final three quarters.
Mitchel, a true freshman from Mansfield, Texas, has appeared in all six games this season. He leads all SEC freshmen and ranks fourth on the team with 30 tackles.
Mitchel is the first Razorback to earn the conference’s freshman of the week honor since Dennis Johnson in the final week of the 2008 season. The 10th-ranked Razorbacks return to the field Oct. 22 at Ole Miss following a bye this week.
