Modica, Brewer Named to Preseason All-SEC Team
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Jonathon Modica and Ronnie Brewer, Arkansas’ top two scorers and recently named captains in a vote of their teammates, have each earned preseason All-Southeastern Conference honors.

The SEC’s first preseason all-conference basketball team was released Thursday with Modica and Brewer each making the second team in a vote of the league’s coaches.

“It’s an honor for them to be recognized by the coaches,” UA head coach Stan Heath says. “This means there are expectations they will have to work hard to live up to and surpass, but they are both very deserving. They are two of our leaders and will play a key role in the amount of success we have this season.”

Modica was a second-team All-SEC selection last year as a sophomore when he was eighth in the league in scoring (16.5 ppg), seventh in field goal percentage (.462) and ninth in free throw shooting (.782). Brewer earned freshman All-America honors from Rivals.com (second team) and College Basketball News (third), in addition to making the SEC’s All-Freshman team. He was second on the team in scoring (12.2 ppg) while leading the Razorbacks in rebounding (5.5), assists (3.4) and steals (2.0). He was in double figures scoring 18 times, and led the team in assists 15 times and in rebounding eight times.

Joining Modica and Brewer on the second team are junior forward Chuck Davis and senior guard Earnest Shelton of Alabama, junior guard Kelenna Azubuike of Kentucky, senior forward Brandon Crump and junior guard C.J. Watson of Tennessee, senior forward Carlos Powell of South Carolina and junior guard Mario Moore of Vanderbilt. The first team includes senior forward David Lee, junior guard Anthony Roberson and junior forward Matt Walsh of Florida, junior forward Kennedy Winston of Alabama, senior forward Chuck Hayes of Kentucky, sophomore forward Brandon Bass of LSU, senior forward Lawrence Roberts of Mississippi State and senior guard Scooter McFadgon of Tennessee.

Modica and Brewer are two of four returning starters for Arkansas. Junior guard Eric Ferguson (8.1 ppg, 2.8 assists) and sophomore guard/forward Olu Famutimi (7.0 ppg, 3.5 rpg), an honorable mention freshman All-American by Rivals.com, also return. Other returnees are 6-9 senior forward Michael Jones (4.8 ppg), 6-10 sophomore forward Vincent Hunter (3.8 ppg, 3.2 rpg), 6-8 junior forward Rashard Sullivan (3.0 rpg) and 6-7 sophomore guard Preston Cranford.

UA’s recruiting class, which is ranked No. 13 in the nation by Rivals.com, No. 15 by Athlon Sports and No. 16 by Hoop Scoop, includes 7-0, 233-pound freshman center Steven Hill; 6-4 junior college point guard Dontell Jefferson; 6-1 freshman guard Sammy Munsey; 6-7, 243-pound freshman forward Charles Thomas; and 6-10, 250-pound center Darian Townes.

UA opens its season with the Red-White Game at 2:05 p.m. on Oct. 30.
