More titles on the way for women's tennis

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Three University of Arkansas Razorbacks will be contending for a flight title on Sunday at the William & Mary Tribe Invitational.

In singles action, No. 1 Aurelija Miseviciute (Flight A), freshman Emily Carbone (Flight C) and senior Nanar Airapetian (Flight D), are all looking for a title on Sunday. For doubles, two Razorback tandems will share the title in Flight A as Miseviciute and Airapetian along with teammates Ela Kaluder and Anouk Tigu are co-champions.

“We definitely took another large step forward on Saturday,” said Arkansas head coach Michael Hegarty. “Winning those two tie-breaks in doubles is thrilling especially against such quality competition.”

Matches begin with the doubles finals at 7 a.m.

Miseviciute showed off why she is the top-seed at the Invitational, 6-1, 6-4, over William & Mary’s own #87 Ragini Acharya in the quarterfinals. Then, she dropped Lane Krasnopolsky of Boston College, 6-1, 6-2, setting up her final match with Harvard’s Beier Ko.

In Flight C, Carbone quickly defeated Boston College’s Katarina Gajic, 6-4, 6-1, then Maria Prishlyak of Penn State, 6-4, 5-7, 6-1, in the semifinals. She advances to face Katharine Attwell from Boston College on Sunday.

Airapetian shot through Flight D on Saturday with two straight-set victories for her road to the final. Her 6-2, 6-2 win over Richmond’s Xenia Schneider and 6-2, 6-3 march over Samantha Rosekrans of Harvard opened many eyes on Saturday.

Only two events into the 2008 fall season, the Razorbacks have displayed their doubles play will once again be a strength. Miseviciute and Airapetian snuck past Michaela Kissel and Lauren Greco of Miami-FL, 9-8(5), as Kaluder and Tigu defeated Acharya and Katarina Zoricic of William & Mary by the same score.

In Flight B singles, Tigu claimed a win over Joanna Matusczyk, 4-6, 6-2, 6-0, before withdrawing from the tournament for precautionary reasons.

In the consolation draw of Flight B, freshman Kate Lukomskaya defeated Angela DiPastina of Ohio State, 3-6, 6-0, 14-12.
