National teams call on Razorbacks

FAYETTEVILLE – Brooke Fournier and Raymariely Santos, members of the University of Arkansas volleyball team, have been invited to spend the summer with national teams from their respective countries. Fournier was selected by the 2011 USA Volleyball Junior A-2 Team while Santos will return to her native country to resume her duties with the Puerto Rico National Team.

"This is a great opportunity for both Brooke and Raymariely," head coach Robert Pulliza said. "Anytime you can represent your country, not only are you competing against the very best from around the world, but you’re also playing and training with the best. This will be an invaluable experience for both of them."

In conjunction with "Bring It USA Promotions," the USA Junior A-2 Team will travel to Europe in July for a four-day competition. Fournier and her teammates will begin the trip with training sessions with the British National Team in Sheffield, England. The European Global Challenge will then be held July 18-21 in Croatia. This will mark the second time in three years a Razorback will participate in the A-2 Junior program; Kelli Stipanovich was a member of the 2009 team.

Fournier, a native of Redondo Beach, Calif., was Arkansas’ starting libero for a majority of the season, one of just two freshman libero starters in the SEC. She had four matches with at least 20 digs, including a season-high 26 digs against UAB, and finished the year with 3.06 digs per set.

Santos is familiar with the Puerto Rico National Team having played at the Grand Prix in Brazil, Japan and Thailand and the NORCECA Championships last year. The silver medal for the team at the NORCECA event was the first-ever medal for the nation at the tournament. During her years with the national program, Santos has also served as a past captain for the Youth and Junior National Teams.

The Ponce, Puerto Rico, native was the Razorbacks’ setter for a majority of the season and earned SEC All-Freshman honors for her play. She became the ninth player in program history to be named a league all-freshman performer. Along the way, Santos earned two Freshman of the Week and one Defensive Player of the Week awards.
