NCAA spot on the line at regional meet

FAYETTEVILLE – The University of Arkansas women’s cross country team heads to Waco, Texas, to compete Saturday, Nov. 13, at the NCAA South Central Regional meet. The competitors in the women’s 6K race will toe the line at 10 a.m. (CT) at the Cottonwood Creek Golf Course.

"This is the gatekeeper to the NCAA Championship meet," head coach Lance Harter said. "It’s a very simple formula. The top two teams automatically qualify for nationals. We’re in the mix, basically in a triangular with Texas, Rice and ourselves. Our kids are healthy and training well. Now, it’s about taking care of a race plan and we’re real excited about it."

In the most recent release of the USTFCCCA national poll, the Razorbacks are receiving votes; Arkansas has been as high as No. 25 this season. In the South Central regional, the team is No. 2 in the rankings behind Texas. As part of the South Central region, the Razorbacks are joined by teams from Arkansas, Louisiana, and east and central Texas. The rest of the region’s top five includes the teams from Rice, Texas A&M and Stephen F. Austin.

The Razorbacks have captured 15 NCAA regional titles, raced to eight runner-up finishes and have claimed a top-three spot since the regional format was implemented in 1982. The team’s last regional crown came at the 2008 race in Waco, Texas. Six Arkansas student-athletes have taken home an individual title with three-Deena Drossin (1992, 1993), Megan Flowers (1994, 1995) and Lilli Kleinmann (1999, 2000)-winning two times.

At the 2009 regional meet, Arkansas picked up a third-place finish result 66 team points, finishing behind SMU and Baylor. Paced by Alyssa Allison and Miranda Walker, the Razorbacks finished two in the top 10, five in the top 20 and all seven runners in the top 28. The team picked up six all-region honors along the way.

In their last race, the Razorbacks earned a silver finish at the 2010 Southeastern Conference meet, just one point from the team title. Race timing and results can be found at DeltaTiming.com, and for complete coverage and more information about the Razorbacks, log on to ArkansasRazorbacks.com.
