FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Adam Shabala and Matt Hopper had three hits each to help Nebraska (11-6) to a 10-4 win over Arkansas (13-8) in Tuesday’s opener of a two-game series at Baum Stadium.
The victory was the Cornhuskers’ second over the Razorbacks this season and ended UA’s six-game home winning streak. Nebraska defeated the Hogs 13-2 on Feb. 20 at the Arlington Morning News Invitational in Arlington, Texas.
In his first start of the season, Nebraska’s Trevor Bullock (1-0) held Arkansas to four runs (three earned) on six hits over eight innings and struck out five to earn the victory. Arkansas starter Matt Riethmaier (0-3) took the loss after giving up five runs (three earned) on seven hits in five innings of work.
Nebraska took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a home run by Shabala, his first of the season. Consecutive singles by Jack Welsh, Jeff Fletcher and Scott Crossett helped the Hogs answer with three in the bottom of the first for a 3-1 lead.
With Arkansas clinging to a 3-2 lead in the top of the fifth, Nebraska got three-straight singles by Brandt Vlieger, Josh Hesse and Jamal Strong and an Arkansas defensive miscue and scored two runs for a 4-3 lead the Huskers would not relinquish.
NU added four runs in the sixth and two in the seventh and led 10-3 until UA’s Kyle Washburn connected for a solo home run in the ninth, his second homer of the season. Washburn led the Razorbacks with two hits and two RBI.
Arkansas and Nebraska conclude the series Wednesday at 4 p.m. CT. The Razorbacks open their home Southeastern Conference slate this weekend whey they host No. 11 Auburn in a three-game series at Baum Stadium. Friday’s series opener is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. CT.
