FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Four members of the University of Arkansas women’s tennis team will compete Friday through Sunday in Wichita, Kan., at the Wichita State Fall Classic.
Along with the Razorbacks and host Shockers, the singles and doubles event at the Coleman Tennis Complex will feature student-athletes from Arkansas State, Oklahoma State, Kansas State and Oklahoma. There will be two singles flights and one doubles flight.
The tournament will be played in an individual format, with all 28 competitors representing their respective schools. Play will commence Friday with 13 doubles teams playing in one draw beginning at 9 a.m. Central time and doubles quarterfinals at 10 a.m.
Arkansas coach Michael Hegarty is sending freshmen Claudine Paulson, Annemijn Koenen, Adriana Nieto and Lindsey Gray to compete in this weekend’s event. All four will make their collegiate debuts.
"We’ll be looking to get some more matches under our belts for our younger players this weekend," Hegarty said. "It is a solid field and we will certainly be well tested."
Singles competition is slated to start at 1 p.m. with the 16-team Flight A taking the courts first. The 12-team Flight B will begin at 2:30 p.m. to complete the final round of the day. Saturday will start at 9 a.m. with doubles semifinals before singles play begins quarterfinals at 10 a.m. with the Flight A/B main draw.
The doubles final begins at 9 a.m. Sunday with the final round of singles to follow at 10 a.m.
In doubles action, Paulson and Koenen will start things off against Kansas State’s tandem of Antea Huljiev and Nina Sertic. Gray and Nieto are set to play Jenny Herring and Rone Van Wyk of Arkansas State.
In singles, Paulson faces Nataliya Shatkovskaya of Oklahoma State in the first round of the A flight, while Koenen takes on Stephanie Dalmacio. In Flight B, Grey will battle Lily Wakim of Wichita State, and Nieto gets a bye into the quarterfinal round.
