FAYETTEVILLE — The No. 1 University of Arkansas men’s track and field team will host the University of Texas in an indoor dual meet Friday evening at the Randal Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville. The Longhorns enter the season opener ranked third in the USTFCCCA preseason poll. Field events begin at 6 p.m. (CT) with running events–all finals–starting at 7 p.m. General admission tickets for home meets are $5, while fans 17 years and younger are admitted for free and University of Arkansas students get in free with their valid student ID. “The first meet of the year is always fun,” head coach Chris Bucknam said. “There’s energy in the building with our guys because it’s the first competition of the year. It should be a fan-friendly meet and we look forward to shaking the cobwebs off and getting after it. The scope of the meet is perfect for us and we get great competition from the Texas Longhorns.” Friday’s meet will be scored on a 5-3-2-1 scale with the first-place individual receiving five points and so on. Only two competitors per team will score in each event with the top two finishers for both receiving the points. In the relay events, only one relay foursome per team will score. Now in the series’ fourth year, the Razorbacks have won the previous three indoor dual meets with Texas. Last season, Arkansas came away with an 89-81 win over the Longhorns with the help of nine event wins including a school-record effort by Andrew Irwin in the pole vault. The team also collected wins from current Razorbacks Brede Ellingsen in the high jump, Akheem Gauntlett at 200 meters and Caleb Cross, Marek Niit and Travis Southard as members of the 4×400-meter relay. Arkansas enters the meet as the No. 1 team in the country with Tuesday’s release of the USTFCCCA preseason rankings. The Razorbacks are one of seven Southeastern Conference teams in the poll, four of which are top-10 selections. Arkansas was the national runner-up at last year’s NCAA Indoor Championships and features 18 All-Americans on its 2013 roster. Bucknam (distance) returns for his fifth season at the helm of the Arkansas cross country and track and field program. Assistant coaches Doug Case (sprints, hurdles, pole vault) and Travis Geopfert (field events, multis) are in their fifth and fourth seasons at Arkansas, respectively. Friday’s competition is the first of 11 home meets–six indoor and five outdoor–for the Razorbacks this season. Arkansas’ hosting duties will include the 2013 NCAA and SEC Indoor Track and Field Championships. The indoor national meet will be contested March 8-9, while the conference meet will take place Feb. 22-24. Next weekend, the Razorbacks will travel to College Station, Texas, for the Texas A&M Triangular.
