Nott claims top spot in flight at Purdue

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Freshman Mike Nott came out on top for the third consecutive day at the Purdue Invitational by defeating Falk Debeenhouwer of Southern Illinois, 6-2, 6-3, and claim the champions spot of Flight C to end a great opening weekend to his Razorback career.

“I was very pleased with Mike’s play all weekend long,” said head coach Robert Cox. “It’s refreshing to see a freshman come in and play as well as he did in his first tournament as a college player.”

Before reaching the final match, Nott had a little bit of work to do in his semifinal match with Jan-Frans Englebrecht of Purdue. In that match, Nott jumped out to a first set victory, 6-2, but had a little trouble closing out the second set. However, he put himself in the final singles match of Flight C with a 7-6 (9-7) second set victory and move on to play Debeenhouwer. With the final victory, Nott moved to 5-0 in singles to start the fall.

Nott wasn’t the only Razorback in singles action on the day. Junior Nikolas Zogaj, who reached the semifinals of Flight B the day before, was set to face Ryan Bandy of Notre Dame in hopes of a finals spot as well. Unfortunately, it wasn’t in the cards for the Belgium native as he dropped the match in straight sets to Bandy, 6-3, 6-4. Zogaj ended the weekend with a 3-1 record in singles.

Overall, all four Razorbacks who participated in the invite compiled a 16-5 record, including doubles. According to Cox, this is definitely something the team can build on.

“This was a good start for us,” he said. “It was good to start out like this because now we can still improve and make some big strides this fall.”

Next weekend, the two top Hogs travel to Charlottesville, Va. to take part in the Virginia 1 Plus 1. Seniors Christopher Nott and Matthew Hogan will face some of the top singles talent in the country as well as the top doubles teams. Entering the tournament, Nott is ranked 41st in singles, while the duo of Nott and Hogan are ranked 37th by ITA in doubles.
