Overstreet Advances, Hogs Finish Eighth

Final Results

BATON ROUGE, La. – The Arkansas men’s golf team made an early final round push Wednesday morning at the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional, but the Razorbacks came up short of advancing to the National Championship, finishing eighth overall with rounds of 299-301-293 – 893 (+29).

Freshman Mason Overstreet put together the round of his life, rolling in six birdies and recording a 5-under 67 to move 27 spots up the leaderboard and finish alone in sixth place to advance to the NCAA National Championship as an individual. The National Championship will be held May 26-31 at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Illinois.

“I would really like to go with the team, but advancing to Nationals as an individual is a huge honor,” said Overstreet. “I really had it working off the tee today and everything came easy for me. It feels great to get through as a freshman.”

The Kingfisher, Oklahoma, native birdied all four of the par fives and was one of two players in the field to birdie the par four 18th hole during the final round. Overstreet was 185 yards out on the 18th hole, hit a five iron to five feet, and sank the putt. He finished tied for the third lowest score for a Razorback at NCAA Regionals.

Entering the final round 11 shots off the cut line, Arkansas made an early surge up the leaderboard as Alvaro Ortiz birdied three of his first four holes and William Buhl added back-to-back birdies to get Arkansas to 5-under.

The Razorbacks closed the gap to five shots as it neared the turn, but Northwestern and Oregon stretched the lead back to double digits as Arkansas made its way to the final nine holes of the championship. The Razorbacks carded the second-lowest round of the day as a team, firing a 5-over 293 with 19 birdies.

Host LSU won the team title at 2-over, while (+10), Oregon (+15), Virginia (+19) and Jacksonville (+19) rounded out the top five and will all advance to the National Championship.

The Razorbacks end the year with an overall record of 102-67-3, including a 60-50-3 mark during the spring season. Arkansas misses the NCAA Championship for just the second time in the last five seasons.
