Overstreet Dazzles In Opening Round At Pebble Beach

CARMEL, Calif. – Sophomore Mason Overstreet fired the best round of his collegiate career on Friday, sending Arkansas to a 6-under 354 as a team in the opening round of the Carmel Cup at Pebble Beach Golf Club.
Overstreet picked up right where he left off after his runner-up finish at the 2017 NCAA National Championship, posting six birdies and no bogeys on the front nine to make the turn tied for the lead. His lone blemish on the card came at the par three 12th hole, but he bounced back with an eagle two holes later and pushed his score to 7-under. The Kingfisher, Oklahoma, native came in with four consecutive pars to record his best collegiate round with a 7-under 65 to sit alone in second place and just one shot back of the lead.
Senior Alvaro Ortiz played his 10th collegiate round at Pebble Beach to open his senior campaign and eight of those have been under par after a 2-under 70 on Friday with three birdies and one bogey. He has six consecutive rounds under par at the historic course after finishing runner-up at the event last season.
Luis Garza got his sophomore season off to a rocky start with a triple bogey on the opening hole, but he quickly settled in with birdies on three of the next five holes. He recorded an eagle on the signature par five 18th hole to cap his day with an even-par 72.
William Buhl recorded a 1-over 73 with four birdies on the card to sit T-31st place overall, while junior Charles Kim and sophomore Dylan Naidoo rounded out the team with matching 2-over 74’s.
In a loaded field with three of the top seven teams in the country, the Razorbacks are alone in fourth place at 6-under, while No. 2 Oklahoma State leads the way at 22-under. Arkansas leads No. 15 Texas Tech by two shots and is three strokes clear of top-ranked Vanderbilt.
The Carmel Cup features a rare format with six players per team and the top five counting scores contributing to each round’s total. The Razorbacks return to the course Saturday morning at 10 a.m. CT with live stats available at Golfstat.com or via the Golfstat Live app.
