TULSA, Okla. – Junior Claudine Paulson led the charge for the Razorbacks on day one of the ITA Central Regional Championships in Tulsa, Okla. After advancing to the third round of the doubles draw with a first round bye, Paulson followed up in singles with two straight victories to advance to the round of 16.
Paulson was the only Arkansas player to reach the round of 16 in singles on the first day. Her victories included a three-set victory over Carla Venticinque of Wichita State in the first round, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, and a straight set win over Alexa Palen of Minnesota, 6-4, 6-3, in the second round.
Even with the amount of second round losses in singles, the Hogs made up that ground in the doubles draw and advanced both teams to the third round, where they will be looking for a spot in the quarterfinals.
“Our quality of play was very high today,” said Arkansas head coach Michael Hegarty. “In doubles, the results certainly reflected that. Our singles looked really strong overall and all four players took a step forward today.”
With both doubles teams earning a top eight seed before the tournament began, both received a first round bye and only needed one match win to advance to the third round. After Paulson and senior Kate Lukomskaya earned their fourth win of the year to stay undefeated, seniors Stephanie Roy and Emily Carbone followed suit with an 8-4 win over Biljana Milosevska and Janie Nowland of Arkansas State for their third win of the year. Both Razorback teams now only need three wins to reach doubles final.
In singles, the women’s tennis team had mixed results. With the exception of Paulson, who advanced to the third round with two straight wins, two other Razorbacks only reached the second round before falling in their second match.
For Roy, who won her first round match with Mia Lancaster of Oklahoma in straight sets, had a tough second round match with Oklahoma State’s Kanyapat Narattana. Roy lost the first set, 7-5, but bounced back well with a 6-4 second set win to send the match to a deciding third set. Even with the comeback, Roy couldn’t prevail to Narattana as she dropped the third set 7-5.
As the only Hog netter still alive in the singles draw, Paulson will continue her run on Saturday in hopes of reaching the quarterfinals. Her third round match pits her against Katerina Morozova of Kansas. Lukomskaya, Roy and Carbone will play in the consolation bracket for the remainder of the tournament.
Play on Saturday is set to begin with doubles at 8 a.m., which will be followed by singles soon after. Full recap and complete results will be posted online following the day’s matches.
