Creighton Head Coach Ed Servais:

“We simply didn’t hit well enough or defend well enough to beat a team like Arkansas at their place.”

(On Nick Schmidt)

“Well, not having seen him before, he did a great job. We only got two hits. He competed when he had to. Everytime we had a chance, he made pitches and got out of innings.”

(On Brian Walker’s home run against Pat Venditte)

“(Pat) Venditte was brought in to give (Walker) a different look. We probably asked him to do too much. He probably shouldn’t have been in the ballgame, but he gutted it out.”

Creighton Starting Pitcher Ben Mancuso:

“Going into the game, our plan was to pitch to (Brian) Walker on the outer half of the plate with breaking balls. The second at-bat I hung a curveball in the middle of the plate and he drove it out of the park. We probably should have started him off with harder stuff and then worked in the breaking pitches.”

Creighton First Baseman Darin Ruf:

“Against (Nick) Schmidt we were looking for pitches away and we were able to drive quite a few but just could not get enough of one. For the most part I thought we executed well but they made more plays and we were never able to get the big hit. We squared up a lot of balls and had their outfielders running gap-to-gap, but we got under them a little too much.”

Arkansas Head Coach Dave Van Horn:

“Schmidt gave us a chance today and he came through for us. We play, take a hour and hopefully use this to get us going. We are going to have to hit tonight. The pitcher was crafty, throwing cutter right handed and switching it up; he did a tremedous job.

(On tonight’s pitcher)

“I’m not sure who we will have pitching tonight. We’re going to take it one batter at a time.”

Arkansas Starting Pitcher Nick Schmidt:

“I didn’t feel a lot of pressure. It’s the same game and we have to win. I didn’t even notice the wind blowing, but Jake and Coon made some great catches. I couldn’t get my fastball inside. It just kept hitting them so I had to make some changes.

(On Brian Walker)

“He came up with some bigs hits. He’s a great player and has timely hitting.”
