Powell garners another honor

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Freshman Marshawn Powell garnered his second SEC All-Freshman team honor on Thursday when he was named to Sporting News’ squad which recognized six first-year players.

Powell was named an SEC All-Freshman team player by the Southeastern Conference coaches earlier this week and was one of four unanimous selections by the league’s coaches and the only non-Kentucky player to earn unanimous distinction.

"Marshawn is one of our hardest workers and if anyone deserves this, he does," Arkansas head coach John Pelphrey said. "As a staff we are very proud of him."

This season, Powell has ranked among the top three of SEC freshmen in points and rebounds per game and is the only Razorback to start every game this season. He has led the Hogs in scoring 10 times in 31 games and rebounding 12 while posting 22 double-digit scoring performances. He scored a career high 29 points against Appalachian State in late November and has four 20-point games in SEC play including 27 against then No. 16 Vanderbilt at Bud Walton Arena on February 27.

Powell also earned SEC Freshman of the Week accolades on Feb. 1 after games against Mississippi State and Ole Miss where he averaged 14.0 points and 7.5 rebounds in a pair of Razorback victories.

The Razorbacks participate in the first round of the SEC Championship Tournament on Thursday night at 8:45 p.m. against the Georgia Bulldogs.
