Pulliza opportunity scholarship open for 2013

FAYETTEVILLE — Razorback volleyball head coach Robert Pulliza and wife Jamie are re-opening their scholarship opportunity for an incoming freshman of Hispanic heritage attending the University of Arkansas. This will mark the second time the Pullizas have awarded their scholarship. Hayden Herrera of Springdale, Ark. was the first recipient in 2009 and went on to earn his college degree in three and a half years.

The Robert and Jamie Pulliza Opportunity Scholarship was first established in 2009 and it is a $1,500 renewable fund for students of Hispanic heritage from Benton or Washington County. The scholarship is intended for someone who is not a student-athlete and is renewable for up to four years at Arkansas. Applications are currently being taken and will be accepted until June 30, 2013. The scholarship recipient will be announced July 15, 2013.

“Jamie and I feel fortunate to be able to continue the scholarship,” Pulliza said. “As we said when it was established, we hope this scholarship provides an opportunity to someone who might not otherwise have pursued a college degree. We are also very proud of Hayden. He took full advantage of the opportunity and is now a college graduate.”

Further criteria provides that applicants be a United States citizen or a legal permanent resident, have a minimum high school cumulative grade-point average of 3.00, be accepted to the University of Arkansas as an incoming freshman. In addition, the recipient must be a full-time student and must pass a minimum of 27 hours each year.

Pulliza just completed his fifth season as the volleyball head coach at the University of Arkansas. In 2012, he guided the Razorbacks to their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2006 and saw seniors Roslandy Acosta and Jasmine Norton earn All-America accolades.

In a further show of his dedication to the University and the Northwest Arkansas community, Pulliza is a member of the Athletic Director’s Council on Diversity. During the 2012 season, El Latino, an Arkansas Times publication, named Pulliza to the Who’s Who list of the Latino community in the state of Arkansas. Pulliza is native of Puerto Rico and came to the United States to play volleyball while attending Ball State University.
