Razorback Defense Bounces Back in Monday Worko

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – After a pair of weekend scrimmages that saw the Arkansas offense dominate play, the Razorback defense bounced back with fervor in a two-hour full-pad practice on Monday afternoon.
The Hogs’ defenders showed some new formation looks and forced several turnovers in the hard-hitting workout.
“I think the defense added some new things, but I also think they were tired about hearing about how great the offense was doing,” Arkansas head coach Houston Nutt said. “Every single day you have to be ready. Gavin Walls really stepped up and was very physical. Elliott Harris, Arrion Dixon and Scott Summers have been filling in some gaps for us, and giving great effort. Kenny Hamlin is hard to keep off the field with a broken thumb, but he’s always in the mix and we appreciate his effort. The defense did a great job today.”
Freshman Tarvaris Jackson returned to the field after missing Saturday’s scrimmage. Jackson sat out the weekend workout while nursing a sore knee.
“We gave him (Tarvaris) a few more plays and he has done some good things,” Nutt said. “Since he didn’t get a chance to participate in the Saturday scrimmage, we just wanted to give him a few more live reps. He just needed to catch up.”
With Arkansas through five of its 15 allotted spring workouts, Nutt is pleased with the way the redshirt freshman class has responded so far.
“Lerinezo Robinson, Pierre Brown, Clarke Moore, Jayson Johnson and Kyle Roper have done some good things and really stepped up,” Nutt said. “That’s what we have to have. They’re all one year older, learning and trying to put it all together. What is key is trying to put back-to-back good days together and that’s what they haven’t done yet. They’ve had a good day here and a good day there, but not consistency. That’s what we’re looking for.”
Arkansas will take Tuesday off before returning to the practice field for workouts on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. The Razorbacks are slated to stage another scrimmage on Saturday.
