ST. SIMON ISLAND, Ga. – The Arkansas men’s golf team finished first round play at the SEC Golf Championships in a tie for ninth place after firing a 25-over-par round of 305 on Friday on the Seaside Course at the Sea Island Golf Club.
“We got off to a struggling start today,” Arkansas Head Coach Mike Ketcham said. “We were 12-over after the first three holes, but we came back and salvaged the round by shooting one-under as a team over the final three holes.”
SEC golfers were plagued by a 15-25 mph wind throughout the round that kept scores down for all of the teams. No. 18 Kentucky (+10) leads the tournament after the first round with sixth-ranked Florida close behind at +14-over par.
“We have to come back to the golf course tomorrow and stay patient and play a good round of golf,” Ketcham said. “The wind is going to blow tomorrow like it was today, so we can’t let that rattle us early.”
Freshman Eric Shriver turned in the 45th-ranked Razorbacks best round with a 2-over-par 72 on the 7,005-yard course. He is tied for eighth place headed into Saturday’s second round. Georgia’s Richard Scott leads the tournament after a 2-under-par round of 68.
“Eric Shriver played a solid round of golf today,” Ketcham said. “Now we just have to get the other four guys to play like that.”
Sophomore Matt Bortis shot a 5-over-par round of 75 and is tied for 21st going into the second round. Sophomore Beau Glover shot an 8-over-par 78 for the Hogs’ third-best score.
Redshirt freshman Scotty Campbell, who was the Razorbacks top individual at last week’s Morris Williams Intercollegiate, shot an 11-over par 81. Freshman Barrett Lais turned in a round of 80 (+10) for the Hogs’.
The second round will be played on the Seaside course on Saturday with the final round scheduled for Sunday.
