Razorback Men Fifth In Program Of The Year Standings

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Based on its performance during the cross country and indoor seasons, the No. 6 University of Arkansas men’s track and field team enters the outdoor season in fifth place in the John McDonnell Program of the Year standings. The Razorbacks are in search of their second Program of the Year honor, having previously won the award in 2012-13. Arkansas continues its season April 3-4 with the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif.

Arkansas closed out the indoor season with a third-place finish at the NCAA Indoor Championships which were contested March 13-14 at the Randal Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville. The Razorbacks tallied 16 All-America accolades spread among 10 student-athletes including first-team honors for two-time NCAA champion Omar McLeod who defended his title in the 60-meter hurdles in a collegiate-record time of 7.45.

In their outdoor opener last weekend at the Arkansas Spring Invitational, the Razorbacks collected five wins on their home track with first-place efforts from Kenzo Cotton at 100 meters, Marqueze Washington at 200 meters, Ken LeGassey in the high jump, Devin Randall in the discus and Andrew Henn in the javelin. McLeod and two-time NCAA indoor champion Andrew Irwin are set to make their outdoor debut at Stanford.

The John McDonnell Program of the Year Award is named after USTFCCCA Hall of Famer and former Arkansas head coach John McDonnell whose teams won a five NCAA triple crowns, a combined 40 national championships and finished in the top 10 in cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field in 24 of his 36 seasons in Fayetteville. The first Program of the Year award was given for the 2008-09 season.

The USTFCCCA Program of the Year is awarded annually to the most outstanding cross country/track and field programs in each of the NCAA’s three divisions and for each gender. The award honors the institution that has achieved the most success in each academic year based on the team’s finish at each of the three NCAA Championships.
