AUSTIN, Texas – The University of Arkansas men’s tennis team claimed four singles wins on the first day of play at the Texas Invitational on Friday.
To start off the day, the Razorbacks battled through three doubles matches against players from a No. 9 ranked Texas team, but were unable to come up with a victory.
Turning momentum around, juniors Santiago Munoz and William Albanese, sophomore Juan Marino and freshman David Herrerias collected straight set wins in the singles portion of play. Munoz got off to a good start with a double bagel over Texas’ William Jou (6-0, 6-0). Going up against Alex Buzelan (Texas Tech), Marino came away victorious 6-2, 6-2. In the final sets of the day, Albanese defeated Texas Tech’s Evan Nix 6-0, 6-2 and Herrerias beat Mitchell Cook (Texas A&M-Corpus Christi) 6-3, 6-2.
Arkansas players senior Jovan Parlic and junior Giammarco Micolani battled through three sets but came up just short. Micolani pushed Hugo Dojas (Texas Tech) to a tiebreaker in the third set but fell 6-3, 6-7 (8), 7-5, while Parlic was bettered by Texas Tech’s Alex Sendegeya 7-6 (8), 3-6, 6-2.
Play continues at the Texas Invitational at 10:30 a.m. CT on Saturday with doubles action in the morning and singles following.
