FAYETTEVILLE –Helping the University of Arkansas men’s tennis team to a 6-5 mark to open the season, Johan den Toom was named SEC Freshman of the Week by the league office on Wednesday.
The Rotterdam, The Netherlands, native went 1-0 at the No. 5 singles position in the team’s match against Tulsa on Friday, Feb. 14.
"Johan has produced some good results in both singles and doubles," head coach Andy Jackson said. "Heis showing he has a chance to be a good, quality player in the SEC."
Den Toom became the first Razorback to earn SEC Freshman of the Week honors under Coach Jackson and the first @RazorbackMTEN student-athlete to receive weekly honors since Matt Walters in 2012.
Den Toom is currently on a team- and career-high five-match singles win streak and hasn’t lost a singles match since January 24. He is 6-2 in singles play this spring and 6-5 as part of two different doubles pairings.
Arkansas hosts a full weekend beginning with hosting Oklahoma State at 1 p.m. on Saturday at the Billingsley Tennis Center. The Razorbacks will then welcome SIU-Edwardsville to Fayetteville for a Sunday doubleheader starting at 11 a.m.
