Razorbacks Begin Action At Central Regional Championships
TULSA, Okla. – Action at the ITA Central Regional Championships began Thursday on the campus of the University of Tulsa, as six Razorbacks advanced to the round of 64 in singles action.
In doubles action Arkansas went unscathed with each of the three squads competing advancing to the second round. Oscar Mesquida earned a bye and will start doubles competition Friday.
Arkansas went 6-2 in the round of 128 to begin singles play in Tulsa, Okla. Adam Sanjurjo def. Matt Rodriguez of Oklahoma 6-3, 6-3 to begin a string of three consecutive victories for the Razorbacks. Enrique Paya and Pedro Alonso each won their first round match 6-2, 6-1 against Jon Meyer of Nebraska and Barnabas Koncz of ORU, respectively. Jose Alonso ended the round with a win against Anil Patel (UMKC), 6-2, 6-0.
The Razorbacks would again have a solid round in the round of 64, going 4-2. Oscar Mesquida, who earned a bye in the first round, topped Joe Tyler (Iowa) 6-0, 6-4. Adam Sanjurjo, Enrique Paya, and Josh Howard-Tripp would also advance to the round of 16.
In doubles, Arkansas went undefeated on the day, going 3-0. Josh Bortnick and Enrique Paya began the day by defeating the duo of Justin Nogalski/Oscar Pachon of SLU. The pairs of Josh Howard-Tripp/Alex Reco and Jose and Pedro Alonso also advanced.
