Razorbacks Finish Second at the Cowboy Jambore

STILLWATER, Okla. – For the first time since the 1997 national championship, the University of Arkansas men’s cross country team finished in second place on Saturday at the Cowboy Jamboree in Stillwater, Okla. The Razorbacks had a sixteen-meet winning streak going in to today’s race since the Hogs finished second to Stanford at the 1997 NCAA championships.
“We did not run bad,” UA head coach John McDonnell said. “James (Karanu) was a little dehydrated so he fell off a little bit. Abilene Christian was pretty good. They are a Division II school so they have no age limit and they were a little bit older. Overall, I was pleased. We should have beaten them, but we gave up a few places. There was not much time between the top finishers. Abilene Christian came to beat us, and they did.”
James Karanu finished in fifth place overall (24:31) and led the Razorbacks. Other finishers for the Razorbacks included Sharif Karie (24:48) in eighth, Daniel Lincoln (24:51) in 10th, Murray Link (24:53) in 12th and Frans Schimper (25:07) in 15th.
The Razorbacks will return to action when they host the Chili Pepper Invitational at the Razorback Cross Country Course in Fayetteville, Ark., on Friday, Oct. 14.
