FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The 20th-ranked Arkansas Razorbacks return to Fayetteville Tuesday for an important regional match against the 53rd-ranked Oklahoma Sooners. Arkansas is 2-0 on the season and is coming off a 5-2 victory at Army over the weekend.
Arkansas Coach Robert Cox said the Hogs will face their biggest challenge of the young season.
“Oklahoma has their best team in a decade,” Cox said, “They have the No. 1 player in our region, so they’re very strong at the top. They are very deep and coached very well.
The Sooners’ Marek Velicka is currently the top-ranked player in the Central Region, and is nationally recognized at No. 43. The Razorbacks will counter Velicka with Junior Adrians Zguns. Zguns is ranked No. 2 in the region, and 56th nationally. Zguns is 2-0 in 2005.
“This is our toughest test so far this season,” Cox said, “We’re going to have our hands full with this Oklahoma team. They’re much better than their ranking indicates.
After Tuesday’s match, Arkansas is on the road until their SEC home opener against Vanderbilt on March 25th. The Hogs begin the road stretch Friday in Columbus, Ohio against No. 11 Ohio State. The Razorbacks also play 60th-ranked Michigan State in Columbus on Sunday.
Tuesday’s match is set for 5 p.m. at the Dills Indoor Tennis Center in Fayetteville. There will be free pizza and beverages served.
