Razorbacks Take First Game of Double Header at

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Arkansas took the first game of a SEC double header Saturday afternoon at Cliff Hagan Stadium with an 8-5 win over Kentucky in front of 218 fans.
The 15th-ranked Razorbacks improved to 33-11 on the season and 9-10 in SEC play with the win. The wild cats fell to 21-20 with the loss and 3-15 in league action.
Nick Schmidt settled down after allowing two first-inning runs and three hits to improve to 6-1 on the season. Schmidt allowed just three hits after the first inning and struck out seven. He walked three, but two of those came on the first two batters of the seventh inning before he was lifted for veteran right-hander Charley Boyce.
Boyce came on with no outs in the seventh inning and got a fly ball to left field and a double play to get out of the inning. He pitched the final three innings to earn his third save of the season.
Brian Walker set a career-high with three hits. He hit his sixth home run of the season and added a double and a single. Ben Tschepikow also produced his first three-hit game with a double and two singles.
Kentucky starting pitcher Kalen Gibson (4-2) pitched 7.1 innings, surrendering eight runs – six earned – on 12 hits to take the loss. The six earned runs were the most allowed by Gibson this season.
Schmidt got in an early bind by loading the bases with no outs in the first inning and then uncorking a wild pitch to give Wildcats a 1-0 advantage. Antone DeJesus singled home another run with two outs only to get thrown out at second base trying to stretch it into a double by right-fielder Blake Parker.
The Razorbacks got on the scoreboard in the top of the second inning with an unearned run. Arkansas turned two walks into a run as Kentucky shortstop Ryan Wilkes misplayed a relay throw that allowed Clay Goodwin to score from second base on a fly ball into deep center field.
Tschepikow doubled to lead off the third inning and came around to score on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Clint Arnold. Hamblin drove in the Hogs third run with a single up the middle.
Arkansas extended its lead to 4-2 in the fourth inning with a sacrifice fly by Blake Parker to right field. UA scored a two-out run in the fifth inning as a hustling Danny Hamblin, who reached on a walk, scored from first on a double by Clay Goodwin.
Walker connected for his sixth home run of the season to lead off the sixth inning. The blast cleared the scoreboard in right field.
The Razorbacks pulled away with two more runs in the seventh inning, chasing Gibson from the game. Walker doubled in the inning and Tschepikow added a RBI single. Craig Gentry plated the second run with a run-scoring fielders choice.
Kentucky scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning as Kentucky closed the gap to 8-5.
The second game of the double header is scheduled for 3:06 p.m. (CDT) and will be televised on Fox Sports Net.
