ATHENS, Ga. — The 32nd-ranked Razorback men’s tennis team went into Friday’s match with 4th-ranked Georgia looking for its second conference win of the season, but, unfortunately came back empty-handed as it was shutout by the Bulldogs, 7-0 Friday afternoon in Athens, Ga.
The Razorbacks had trouble all day long in singles with Georgia as nearly every match was won in straight sets with the exception of the No. 6 position. Freshman Jovan Parlic was coming off a 4-0 winning streak that he accumulated last week in the matches with Wichita State, Southern Miss, Lamar and UMKC. On Friday, he took Georgia’s No. 6 player, Campbell Johnson, to three sets after winning the second set, 6-4. Parlic ended up losing the super-tiebreaker third set, 10-1, but he easily had the best match for any Razorback on the day as he is now 12-5 on the year.
“Georgia was just too good today,” Arkansas head coach Robert Cox said. “In matches like this, everything has to go right for you and you have to be firing on all cylinders. We weren’t able to do that today, but we’ll be ready for Tennessee on Sunday when we return home to face them. We’re going to defend our home court on Sunday.”
The Bulldogs went on to win the doubles point over the Hogs early on with wins at courts one and three. Freshman Victor Hoang and senior Taj Harrison were playing in their first SEC match of the season at No. 3 doubles, but could not get much going against Wil Spencer and KU Singh as they fell by a score of 8-2.
Georgia went on to clinch the doubles point at court one when the 31st-ranked team of Ignacio Taboada and Hernus Pieters defeated senior Nikolas Zogaj and junior Gregoire Lehmann, 8-3. The loss breaks a two-match winning streak that Zogaj and Lehmann brought into the match on Friday.
Arkansas returns home for its next match on Sunday when they will face Tennessee at the Billingsley Tennis Center with first serve set for 1 p.m. Live stats and the live blog will be available during the match and a full recap with complete results can be found online following play.
