Razorbacks Dropped by No. 41 Fresno St. 6-1
FRESNO, Calif. – Arkansas got a win at the top of both its doubles and singles lineup, but the No. 61 Razorbacks could not overcome No. 41 Fresno St., 6-1, at the Wathen Tennis Center in Fresno, Calif.
Arkansas falls to 5-6 on the year, while Fresno St. improves to 4-3.
The Razorbacks 15th-ranked doubles pair of Colin Mascall and Blake Strode teamed to score a win at No. 1 doubles, edging Jakub Cech and Mirko Zapletal, 9-8(6). Fresno St. claimed the match on court three, and the decisive match came on court two, where Arkansas’ Jorge Villanueva and Dmitry Vlaskin dropped a close decision to the Bulldogs’ Charles Irie and Tejesvi Veerepalli, 9-7.
Mascall and Strode bettered their season record to 9-2, 6-1 in dual matches.
Strode, ranked 72nd, continued his solid start to the season, notching a win at No. 1 singles, 7-6(8), 1-6, 6-3, over No. 81 Jakub Cech. The win was Strode’s second consecutive against a ranked opponent. Last time out, Strode upset 34th-ranked Will Gray of Tulsa. For the season, Strode improves to 16-4 on the season and 7-1 in dual matches.
Hog freshman Bradwin Williams made his singles debut against the Bulldogs. Williams becomes the seventh freshman and ninth Razorback overall to make their collegiate debut in the 2007 season.
Arkansas continues their west coast swing Saturday when it faces Fresno-Pacific and The University of the Pacific. Both matches will be played in Fresno, Calif. Fresno-Pacific is a member of NAIA, where it is ranked 6th nationally.
