Razorbacks finish second at Chile Pepper

FAYETTEVILLE – The No. 11 University of Arkansas women’s cross country team ran to a runner-up finish Saturday at the 23rd Annual Chile Pepper Festival at Agri Park in Fayetteville. The Razorbacks were paced by senior Kristen Gillespie who turned in a sixth-place individual finish. The team finished the 6K race with 89 points, just four points behind event winner, No. 17 Texas.

"We were actually pretty even all the way through," head coach Lance Harter said. "It came down to our fourth and fifth runners by two points which means it was a real dual match up. It was a great race. We’re pleased with what we did. We knew Texas was going to be very formidable."

For the second consecutive race, Gillespie was the Razorbacks’ top finisher. She crossed in sixth place with a personal-best 6K time of 20:24.7. Gillespie is the reigning Southeastern Conference Co-Runner of the Week. Jessica Jackson continued her strong freshman campaign with a 15th-place overall finish. She clocked in with a time of 20:56, good for second position in the Razorbacks’ lineup.

Stephanie Brown finished within three seconds of Jackson and took 16th place in Saturday’s race. Brown posted a personal-best 6K time of 20:58.8. Arkansas’ top-five lineup was rounded out by Cali George and Jillian Rosen. George finished 25th overall with a 6K personal-best time of 21:13.3 while Rosen crossed in 29th place with a time of 21:24.1.

The Razorbacks’ sixth runner and second freshman finisher was Dominique Scott. She finished in a time of 21:27.3, good for 31st place overall. Scott was followed by fellow freshman Kaitlin Flattmann who finished in 45th place and clocked in at 21:46.8.

Arkansas’ remaining runners were Keri Wood (21:54.4) in 51st place overall, Michaela Bauer (22:08.4) in 67th place, Shannon Klenke (22:28.8) in 90th place, Rachel Carpino (22:40.3) in 103rd place and Samantha Thompson (23:54.9) in 176th place.
