Razorbacks go undefeated in doubles

West Lafayette, IND. – The University of Arkansas men’s tennis team got a solid showing Friday on the first days of the Midland Invitational and Purdue Invitational. Sophomore Michael Nott led the Razorbacks with two singles wins at Purdue and also added on two doubles wins with teammate Mike Ward, to stay a perfect 4-0 on the day. At Midland, senior Taj Harrison and junior Hall Fess had a slow start in singles, but bounced back in a big way with two doubles wins later in the day.

“We went a perfect 4-0 in doubles in both tournaments, which is fantastic, said Arkansas head coach Robert Cox. “Singles didn’t go quite like we hoped at Midland, but I couldn’t be more proud of these guys. After a long day of singles, Hall (Fess) and Taj (Harrison) were able to come back and turn it on doubles with two straight wins and just really played well. Over at Purdue, Mike Nott had a great start to his season, which is also very good to see”

At Purdue, in his first match of the fall, Nott faced Christopher Hopfe of Wisconsin-Green Bay and had a decisive straight set victory, 6-2, 6-1. He continued the trend in round two against Ryan Drake of Drake with another straight set win, 6-3, 6-4, and move on to round three, where he will face Toledo’s Grant Adams for a spot in the quarterfinals.

In doubles, Nott and Ward pulled out a close 9-8 win over Iowa’s Mitch Beckert and Connor Gilmore in round one. Determined to not let round two’s match against Simon Blomberg and Aaron Wong of Western Michigan be as close, the English duo took the match easily, 8-5. They will play Austin Woldmoe and Billy Weldon of Butler on Saturday as both teams will be vying for a spot in the doubles championship.

Back at Midland, it was not the greatest day in singles for Harrison and Fess, but the two were able to put those matches in the rearview mirror and win two straight doubles matches that had gone to tiebreakers. A 9-8(6) win over Justin To and Isamu Tachibana of Rice led to a match with Joseph Hattrup and Tobias Flood of SMU. Again, the Hog duo would force an 8-8 tiebreaker and for the second straight time, came out on top 9-8(10) for their second win of the season.

All four players will be back in action on Saturday in doubles at both tournaments. Mike Nott will be the lone Razorback still participating in singles in either tournament. Matches are set to begin at 7:30 a.m. CST at the Purdue tournament and 8:30 a.m. at the Midland Tournament.
