Razorbacks History at NCAA Championships

FAYETTEVILLE — The University of Arkansas gymnastics team is competing in the NCAA Championship in Los Angeles, Cali., later this week, but in just their 11th season, the Razorbacks are regulars on the national stage. Arkansas qualified for the NCAA Championship by finishing second in the Corvallis NCAA Regional in Corvallis, Ore., on April 6. The top two teams from each of the six regionals advance to the national semifinals.

The Razorbacks are in the Session II semifinal at 8 p.m. on Friday. The No. 11 seed overall, Arkansas is competing with Oklahoma, Alabama, UCLA, Michigan and UTAH. The Session I semifinal includes Florida, Georgia, LSU, Stanford, Minnesota and Illinois.

The top three teams in each semifinal advance to Saturday’s Super Six. The individual event finals are on Sunday.

Arkansas has advanced to the NCAA Championship as one of the top 12 teams in the country six straight years, seven times in eight years and seven times overall in its 11 years. The Razorbacks are assured of ending the season ranked among the nation’s top 15 for the eighth consecutive season.

Arkansas has earned a spot in an NCAA Regional ten straight years, every year the program has existed with the exception of the first in 2003.

In 2006, the No. 19 Razorbacks earned their first trip to the NCAA Championship and finished sixth in the Session II semifinal in Corvallis, Ore., before ending the year No. 12 overall.

After just missing a return trip in 2007 after finishing third in the regional, Arkansas was back in the national championship in 2008. The No. 11 Razorbacks finished fifth in the Session II semifinal in Athens, Ga., ahead of No. 8 Oregon State, and recorded their first top 10 finish by ending the year 10th in the country.

In 2009, Arkansas won its first regional title and finished second in the Session II semifinal in Lincoln, Neb., upsetting No. 2 Utah, No. 6 Oregon State and No. 7 UCLA, and beat No. 11 Illinois to advance to the Super Six for the first time. No. 10 Arkansas beat No. 6 LSU in the Super Six and finished fifth in the nation.

In 2010, No. 7 Arkansas beat No. 10 Missouri in the Session II semifinal in Gainesville, Fla., and finished the year 11th in the nation.

In 2011, No. 10 Arkansas tied No. 7 Georgia and beat No. 11 Illinois in the Session I semifinal in Cleveland to tie for ninth in the nation.

Last year, No. 8 Arkansas finished third in the Session II semifinal in Duluth, Ga., and advanced to the Super Six for the second time in program history. The Razorbacks finished sixth in the nation at the end of the Super Six meet.
