Razorbacks rally by UK

LEXINGTON – Arkansas closed the meet strong on floor and beam as the No. 13 Razorbacks rallied for a 194.975-193.525 Southeastern Conference gymnastics victory at No. 27 Kentucky in Memorial Gym on Friday.

Arkansas trailed after the first and second rotations, but took the lead with a season-best effort on beam of 48.725. The win keeps the Razorbacks undefeated against the Wildcats, improving their all-time record to 16-0-1.

"We performed very aggressively on floor and beam," co-head coach Rene Cook said. "We really attacked our routines, and had a lot of energy and spirit. It was the third meet and we still haven’t counted a fall, but we had some small errors here and there that added up on our team score."

Individually, junior All-American Jaime Pisani won the all-around with a 39.125 and floor with a 9.90, and sophomore Jordan Salsberg won beam with a 9.775.

"Jaime is always great," Cook said. "She did a great job staying steady. Jordan did a great job on all four. I’m pround of Stacy (Bartlett). She strugled a little, but she definitely had a different mindset. She attacked it (beam)."

In the first rotation, Arkansas scored a 48.60 on bars while UK had a 48.675 on vault.

Salsberg led the way with a 9.775, followed by Michelle Stout, Katherine Grable and Pisani all with a 9.725, and Shelby Salmon a 9.65.

For the Wildcats, Whitney Rose had a 9.875 on vault.

On vault, Arkansas scored a 48.725 while the Wildcats had a 48.90 on bars.

Following two rotations, Kentucky led, 97.525-97.325.

For the Razorbacks on vault, Amanda Siebert led with a 9.775, followed by Pisani, Kelci Lewis and Scarlett Williams with a 9.75, and Grable with a 9.70.

For UK on bars, Caitlyn Ciokajlo had a 9.875.

The Razorbacks were solid on floor with a 48.925 while Kentucky struggled with a 47.275 on beam. After three rotations, Arkansas led the meet, 146.25-144.85.

"This one got close in the middle of the competition," Cook said. "We told the team we have to decide, ‘What do you want to do with this?’ I think they responded well."

On floor, Pisani had a 9.90, followed by Grable with a 9.825, Bailee Zumwalde a 9.775, Lewis a 9.725 and Salsberg a 9.70.

Kentucky counted two falls on beam and was led by Andrea Mitchell’s 9.725.

In the last rotation, Arkansas had its season-best performance of 48.725 on beam while UK had a 48.675 on floor.

Salsberg had the 9.775, followed by Williams, Salmon and Pisani with a 9.75 and Bartlett with a 9.70. Bartlett went last in the lineup, following a fall, and stayed on to get her best score of the season and secure the win.

On floor for UK, Jasmine Minion had a 9.80.

"We are learning and the coaching staff is learning about the team," Cook said. "We changed the entire beam lineup tonight and it was nice to see them respond."

Arkansas is on the road again next week, traveling to Auburn for a 7 p.m. meet on Friday.
